The control tyre in MotoGP came in as a result of Bridgestone getting more and more dominant to the point where even Rossi with the overnight special Michelins could not match the Ducati.

Dorna changed the rules in 2007 that did not allow overnight specials, essentially leveling the playing feild for tire manufacturers. The tire suppliers had a certain allocation they could bring to the track and had to choose which compounds were going to be used for that race. Bridgestone did not have the luxury of overnight specials at all of the tracks, mainly the European rounds.

I wonder why no one complained when Michelin dominated the championship?
