Persistent rain on the opening day of the Valencia 250cc test couldn't stop Alvaro Bautista from maintaining his perfect 2009 form.

Fastest on all three days of the previous Jerez test, the Aspar Aprilia star kept his name at the top of the pre-season timesheets by 1.355sec on Saturday, albeit on a day when just four 250GP riders took to the track.

Bautista completed 21 circulations, with his best time set on his penultimate lap, while second fastest Hector Faubel recorded 16 laps of the Valencian Grand Prix circuit as he continues to learn his new Honda machinery.

Former 125cc world champion Gabor Talmacsi shook off a fall to complete the most laps of any 250 rider, 42, while Alex Baldolini rounded out the sparse quarter-litre line-up with a best lap 2.7sec behind Bautista.

Testing continues on Sunday.
