Hungary in doubt.

Hungary's return to the MotoGP calendar in 2009 looks in serious doubt following the news that the Balatonring circuit is unlikely to be ready to host its debut grand prix on September 20.

According to AFP Spanish group Sedesa had failed to begin its part of the construction work on time.

"So, it's very likely that the circuit won't be ready and the race won't be able to go ahead. But we've had no official word from the Spanish side," said the minister for local government, Istvan Gyenesei.

The Hungarian round was added to the 2009 MotoGP calendar at the expense of Shanghai, in China. Motorcycle grand prix racing is very popular in Hungary due to the success of 2007 125cc world champion Gabor Talmacsi.

Rumours suggest that the impressive new Portimao circuit in Portugal could replace the Balatonring event, but that would probably require a calendar reshuffle since Estoril is due to host the Portuguese Grand Prix directly after Hungary on October 4.

Hungary last played host to a motorcycle grand prix back in 1992, when Eddie Lawson took victory from fellow Americans Doug Chandler and Randy Mamola.

That race was only the second held in the country, with the first having taken place in 1990 - both were held at the Hungaroring near Budapest.

Portimao should definetly be in the MotoGP calnedar! And it would cut costs if the two meetings (Estoril & Portimao) would be one afther another. Seeing that the teams wouldn't have to fly to a diferent location... Why not. But I'd also like to see Donington back in the callendar.
