Suzuki keen to up the pace in Jerez

Suzuki's Loris Capirossi and Chris Vermeulen are keen to prove once more that they will be a force to be reckoned with in the 2009 MotoGP season as the final round of pre-season testing kicks off at Jerez this week.

Suzuki have shown impressive form during previous test outings at Sepang and Losail, leading some to believe they could get amongst the 'big three' of Yamaha, Ducati and Honda more regularly this season.

With a 45-minute mock qualifying session planned towards the end of the weekend, the test in Spain is likely to provide the most accurate indicator as to who will be amongst the front runners in 2009.

For the 'fresh and prepared' Capirossi, the Italian is confident that he will be amongst those to be fighting it out towards the front over the weekend.

"We have had a good start to the year, but we must continue to improve,” he said. “I am very fit at the moment and have been training everyday to get ready for the new season.

“I believe that Suzuki will give us a bike that we can win on and I can't wait to see the latest version that we get at Jerez. I am really looking forward to the new season and I feel as prepared and fresh as I ever have done, so I just can't wait to get racing!"

Vermeulen is also interested to see what improvements have been made to the 2009 GSV-R since they were last out on track in Qatar.

"The Jerez test can't come soon enough for me. After the first two tests, where we have made some good advances, it will be interesting to see what improvements the factory has made after all the data we supplied from Sepang and Qatar - I am sure the technicians are doing all they can to find what we are looking for. The Jerez test will be interesting, as it will be the first time we've had a timed session - similar to a new qualifying session - with the single rule tyres.

“This will give us a good chance to gauge what we could possibly expect from qualifying in the coming season. This is our last test before the season starts so it will be very important for the whole team to get in as much work as possible and end the break from racing on a high!"

Meanwhile, Suzuki will use the test as an opportunity to officially launch their 2009 machine having renewed their sponsorship deal with Rizla in recent weeks.

re: Rossi..."If Yamaha was to drop him for Spies..." Excellent! That gave me a hearty laugh! Nice one... I too hope Suzuki are up front this year, but lets not get too carried away... Not long ago (2007 pre-season) Suzuki were consistantly up the front, it was one of the big stories in the media at the time, to the point where even Rossi thought they were gonna be very strong that season... Alas it didn't pan out during the 2007 season I hope it does this year. Good luck Suzuki...

"Did you forget Indianapolis..Spies 6th..CV 9th (9 seconds behind) in the RAIN" Spies did 200 plus laps at Indy a couple of weeks before whilst everyone else hit the track on race weekend. He should have won it!
