The good news for Loris Capirossi and Suzuki was that the new engine parts for the GSV-R "seemed to be an improvement", the bad news was that they also influenced other areas of the bike's performance.

Capirossi set the seventh fastest lap time on the 24th of his 27 Friday free practice laps at Barcelona and was ranked eighth out of 19 riders in terms of top speed, presently the GSV-R's Achilles heal.

"At the end of the session I tried the engine with the new specification and it seemed to be a bit of an improvement on what we are using at the moment, but we have to check the data because it makes the bike perform a bit differently," he explained.

"Overall it has been a good session, but we still need to work a bit more on the set-up to get it perfect for here. The engine does seem to be an improvement and I want to thank Suzuki for all the hard work, because for us this is very important!"

The Italian set a top speed best of 321.3km/h on Friday, 5.9km/h behind Dani Pedrosa's Honda. Last time out at Mugello, which also has a long home straight, Capirossi finished the weekend with a maximum speed ranking of eleventh out of 18 riders and 9.5km/h slower than Pedrosa.

"We managed to try the different specification engine today and in its first run it showed good promise and, if we use it, it could be helpful to the riders come race-day," stated team manager Paul Denning.

It was not clear if Capirossi's team-mate Chris Vermeulen had also tried the engine upgrades, but the Australian was ranked 13th fastest - and only 17th in terms of top speed - by the end of the hour.

"I went out with the hard front and the softer of the two rears - which I kept in for the whole session," he said. "I tried some different chassis set-ups between both of my bikes and we have certainly got a good direction. At the end - with more than race distance on the tyres - I did my fastest laps and moved up the order."
