Pedrosa takes pole at Indianapolis.

Honda's Dani Pedrosa has broken Yamaha's seven-race MotoGP pole domination by a decisive 0.506sec in qualifying at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Pedrosa, fastest in the wet on Friday and over one-second clear of the field in dry Saturday morning practice, was once again fast from the start of this afternoon's one-hour session.

The 2009 Laguna Seca winner exchanged the top spot with fellow Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo just before the halfway stage, then continually improved his pole time to dominate the second half of the session.

Lorenzo, riding with a Captain America helmet, was rarely troubled for second, with Fiat Yamaha team-mate and runaway title leader Valentino Rossi snatching a late third, 0.879sec behind Pedrosa.

Lorenzo or Rossi had taken pole at every event since round four, at Le Mans, when Pedrosa took his first pole of the year.

San Carlo Honda Gresini's Alex de Angelis ran a superb third in Saturday morning practice and came within 0.011sec of holding that position for a front row start in Sunday's race. de Angelis, the top satellite rider on the grid, was the final rider within one second of Pedrosa.

Joining the Sammarinese on row two will be home heroes Colin Edwards and Nicky Hayden. An angry Edwards fell from his Monster Yamaha Tech 3 with eight minutes to go after hitting a bump, bringing his session to an early end, but he held onto fifth by 0.106sec from Hayden.

The Ducati star had been second in the wet on Friday, but ran outside the top ten for the first half of qualifying, before upping his pace and leading the Desmosedici challenge.

Toni Elias was another late faller on his way to seventh for Honda Gresini, while Andrea Dovizioso tumbled early in the hour before salvaging eighth on the second factory Honda.

Marco Melandri was ninth for Hayate, with James Toseland unable to repeat his wet weather pace in tenth on the second Tech 3 machine.

Loris Capirossi led the Suzuki challenge in eleventh, followed by Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda) and Niccolo Canepa (Pramac Ducati) - who held seventh at the halfway mark.

Mika Kallio will start his second race as a factory Ducati rider from just 15th place after also falling in the closing minutes, while Aleix Espargaro - making his MotoGP debut this weekend in place of Kallio at Pramac Ducati - outpaced Gabor Talmacsi (Scot Honda) to start his first premier-class race from 16th position.
