250: di Meglio on pole at Indy.

Reigning 125cc world champion Mike di Meglio has taken his first 250cc pole position during qualifying at Indianapolis.

The Frenchman benefitted from a tow behind world championship leader Hiroshi Aoyama to snatch the top spot by 0.120sec on his very last lap of the afternoon.

di Meglio - like Alex Debon and Marco Simoncelli - had earlier fallen after hitting the same mid-corner bump that caught out Colin Edwards in the MotoGP session.

For reigning 250cc world champion Simoncelli it was his second fall, but the Italian recovered to claim provisional pole from long time leader Hector Barbera with three minutes to go.

Simoncelli (Metis Gilera) will start third behind di Meglio (Aspar Aprilia) and Aoyama (Scot Honda) with Barbera (Pepe World Aprilia) on the outside of the front row in fourth.

di Meglio's team-mate Alvaro Bautista, who will start round eleven 12 points behind Aoyama, qualified in sixth.

The 250cc class did not get to race at Indianapolis last year, due to the appalling weather.

Qualifying - Indianapolis:

1. di Meglio (Aprilia) 1min 44.341sec
2. Aoyama (Honda) +0.120sec
3. Simoncelli (Gilera) +0.212sec
4. Barbera (Aprilia) +0.284sec
5. Cluzel (Aprilia) +0.519sec
6. Bautista (Aprilia) +0.614sec
7. Pasini (Aprilia) +0.817sec
8. Debon (Aprilia) +0.851sec
9. Wilairot (Honda) +1.055sec
10. Faubel (Honda) +1.097sec

I hope Gresini are stocking up with spares for next year! Simoncelli has crashed three times so far this weekend. He's definitely entertaining and fast. I reckon it'll be Aoyama versus Simoncelli tomorrow. Bautista is a bit slower than I expected, he'll be there or thereabouts in the race though.
