Pasini has 'so much fun' on factory Ducati debut
23 September 2009
250GP star Mattia Pasini began his private three-day test for Ducati at Mugello on Tuesday.
The test marks the second time the Italian has ridden a MotoGP bike, after testing the Pramac Ducati at the Brno test in mid-August.
The 24-year-old, a winner of eight 125 and two 250 grands prix, completed 56 laps of the Italian Grand Prix circuit with a best lap time of 1min 52.8sec.
For comparison, the fastest race lap in the 2009 wet/dry (bike swap) grand prix on May 31 was a 1min 51.186sec, set by Fiat Yamaha's Valentino Rossi.
Race winner Casey Stoner set the fastest Ducati lap with a 1min 51.310sec, while the other GP9 riders recorded 1min 53.361sec (Niccolo Canepa), 1min 53.710sec (Nicky Hayden) and 1min 54.305sec (Mika Kallio).
The fastest Ducati in dry qualifying was Stoner with a 1min 49.008sec, the slowest was Kallio with a 1min 51.008sec.
When Troy Bayliss tested for Ducati at Mugello in mid-May of this year, the triple World Superbike champion and MotoGP race winner set a best lap time of 1min 51.2sec.
“It is so much fun to ride the Ducati here at Mugello - this is the circuit to do it at!” said Pasini. “The surface was a little slippery and we're not here to set super fast lap times but by the end we weren't going slowly either.
“I spent this morning 'getting my eye in' for the track and the speed, which is probably more difficult here [than other circuits], but after that we were able to start making a few little changes to adapt the bike to my riding style.
“This is a wonderful experience for which I would like to thank Ducati once again. I can't wait for tomorrow because it is important to have more than a single day on the bike and to get back on it after sleeping on things overnight and allowing all the feelings and excitement of today to sink in."
Pasini is fifth in the 250cc World Championship for Team Toth Aprilia, with one win and five podiums so far this season.
