125cc World championship leader Julian Simon, who starts the final four rounds 57.5 points ahead of Nicolas Terol and can therefore wrap up the title on Sunday, got his Estoril weekend off to a perfect start by lapping over one second ahead of nearest rival Andrea Iannone.

Iannone, fined after head-butting Pol Espargaro as tempers flared following their last-turn clash at Misano, edged out Simon's team-mate Sergio Gadea by just 0.09sec - while third Aspar rider Bradley Smith, presently just five points behind Terol, suffered a big highside and was taken to the medical centre.

Smith finished the session down in 18th as a result, while KTM's Marc Marquez was the only non-Aprilia in the top six.
