Stoner happy to battle title contenders.

"This is their fight and if we get in the middle of it, we get in the middle of it" - Casey Stoner.
Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa have warned MotoGP title contenders Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo not to expect any favours from them, as the 2009 world championship battle reaches its climax.

Yamaha team-mates Rossi and Lorenzo are separated by 18 points at the top of the standings and are the only riders who can still mathematically win the title.

But Repsol Honda rider Pedrosa is just three points ahead of Ducati star Stoner in the fight for third - and both have pledged to race as hard as ever in the remaining three rounds, regardless of what that might mean in terms of the title.

"Make it interesting! smiled Stoner mischievously, when asked what his approach in the remaining rounds will be regarding the title fight.

"You know, I've got my own team and my own results to get as well. This is their fight and if we get in the middle of it, we get in the middle of it.

"We've got our own battle to get third in the championship. There is going to be no giving up a position to help someone else.

"Third is our own little championship battle inside the championship and we'll see what happens. I've got my own race to run."

“Exactly the same thing,” added Pedrosa.

Stoner and Pedrosa finished between Lorenzo and Rossi last time out at Estoril, causing Rossi to lose almost half of his title lead.

Unsurprisingly, both Stoner and Pedrosa refused to say who they would prefer to win the title.

Pedrosa claimed to be thinking only about his own position - “my target is me” - while Stoner implied that he may have a preference.

“I'd prefer not to say,” commented the Australian, winner of his home race for the past two seasons.

First free practice for the 2009 Australian Grand Prix takes place on Friday.

I never understood why some people think it is necessary not to give title contenders a hard time. You do the best you can and fight as hard as you can from the first race to the last. If you do not have that attitude you are not a racer. If you do not mind to do a trick move on a Rossi or Lorenzo in the first race. Why should it bother you in the last race?

Waz I think your memory is failing you, at Mugello it was a case of Stoner staying upright and briefly leading before falling back to 8th, then when he changed tyres at the same time as the other leaders he blew them all away on his out lap as they pussyfooted around.
