Graeme Gowland took the FTR M209 prototype to second position in the Moto2 class during Sunday's final round of the CEV Buckler Spanish Championship at Valencia.

Moto2 machines have been allowed to race in the Formula Extreme (Superbike) class this season to help with development ahead of the inaugural 2010 season of Moto2 grand prix racing.

Gowland, riding under the Joe Darcey Team banner, had finished fourth on his FTR debut the previous Sunday at Jerez, when he had finished 3.557sec behind the top Moto2 of Xavier Fores (Laglisse Yamaha).

At Valencia Gowland qualified and then finished second only to Daniel Rivas (Blusens BQR).

Gowland crossed the finish line 7.184sec behind Rivas after the 19 laps, but just 0.734sec in front of AJR's Daniel Arcas. Nine Moto2 machines were classified at the finish, although Fores was not one of them.

Gowland finished twelfth overall in the combined Extreme/Moto2 class, with Rivas eleventh.

"Every time I get on the machine we make huge steps forward," said Gowland. "We know exactly which areas of the machine need to be addressed and even though we're racing against Superbikes I think podium finishes are possible.

"Considering the machine only ran for the first time six weeks ago and some of the other Moto2 machines have been running since January I think the future for the FTR machine is really exciting.

"We're very close now to beating the best Moto2 laps around Valencia and with the many improvements FTR has planned for the M210 machine everything looks really, really positive for the weeks ahead with the prototype," added Gowland.

FTR will enter Moto2 as a manufacturer, rather than as a race team, and such track performances are sure to catch the eye of team owners - who face the difficult task of trying to predict which will be the most competitive machines for the first year of the championship.

Nevertheless, FTR also gave considerable credit to Gowland.

"An incredible focus on proving the potential of our Moto2 machine has been firmly achieved, but Graeme's performance here at Valencia could not have been better. It was everything one could have hoped for from a talented and clearly determined and motivated young racer," said FTR Moto director Steve Bones.

The other Moto2 riders to reach the flag on Sunday were: Shuhei Aoyama (4th, Blusens BQR Honda + 11.141sec), Roberto Rolfo (5th, Suter Racing Technology +26.023sec), Joan Olive (6th, Promoracing +29.693sec), Oscar Pena (7th, Hune Racing, +1 lap), Julia Olive (8th, +1 lap), Pablo Barrio (9th, Ateconsa AJR +1 lap).

The best Moto2 race lap on Sunday, at the notoriously temperature sensitive Valencia circuit, was a 1min 37.270sec by Rivas.

That compares with a 1min 36.866sec by Hector Barbera (Aprilia) in the 250cc season finale on November 8. The lap time by Rivas would have been the sixth best in the 250GP race.

The present Moto2 machines are still powered by 600cc Supersport engines, with the official Honda-built Moto2 powerplants due early next year.
