Lorenzo sets sights on 2010 MotoGP title

30 November 2009

Jorge Lorenzo insists he will learn from his 2009 mistakes as he gears up for an even greater MotoGP title assault next season.

"This year I achieved the best achievement of my career, by becoming MotoGP runner-up. But next year my target is clearly to be a champion. I have understood my mistakes and will avoid them next season," said Lorenzo, speaking at the Four Seasons Hotel, in Jakarta, on Monday.

Those 'mistakes'; were four non-scores due to accidents at Jerez, Donington Park, Brno, and Phillip Island, compared with just two non-scores for Fiat Yamaha team-mate and eventual seven-time MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi.

Lorenzo lost the title to Rossi at the penultimate round in Sepang and finished the year 45 points behind the Italian. Lorenzo's mistakes cost him a potential 100 points.

The gently increasing rivalry between the Fiat Yamaha team-mates culminated in a statement by Rossi to the BBC that Yamaha should chose between him and Lorenzo for 2011.

The Italian later backed down from those comments, saying that his words were wrongly interpreted. Lorenzo made far less controversial remarks about his future.

"It depends on Yamaha. I respect Rossi as the nine times world champion," said the double 250cc world champion.

Another big name, newly crowned World Superbike champion Ben Spies, will join Rossi and Lorenzo as a Yamaha MotoGP rider next season. Lorenzo confessed he doesn't know what to expect from the highly-rated American.

"I do not know how he will do next season,” he admitted.
