The revised Silverstone layout that is due to welcome the return of the premier class to the celebrated 'Home of British Motor Racing' for the first time in more than two decades later this year should be completed in time for the start of the 2010 MotoGP World Championship campaign, Richard Phillips has affirmed.

Having won the contract away from beleaguered rival Donington Park, Silverstone will stage top-level motorcycling for the first time since 1986 when the British Grand Prix takes place there over the weekend of 18-20 June.

Fears were expressed initially that competitors and spectators alike would lose out following the transition from a smaller, intimate venue to the more wide, open spaces of the former Northants airfield, but a new design for MotoGP has assuaged those concerns somewhat - with improved viewing and facilities for fans and a real riders' circuit the principal goals behind a relentless programme of work and development that is due to be finished by March.

"The biggest change is the new Arena Grand Prix section," explained Silverstone managing director Phillips, speaking to Reuters. "That is a brand new piece of track from Abbey up towards Becketts, and it should introduce some new overtaking opportunities. It makes the circuit slightly longer, but the average speed is supposed to be the fastest for both bikes and cars."

Indeed, aside from MotoGP, Silverstone will also play host to both F1 (July 9-11) and the World Superbike Championship (30 July-1 August) - altogether constituting the motor racing equivalent of the holy trinity.
