After testing an exhausting range of set-up options and new parts, the Ducati Marlboro team is close to identifying the final 'race specification' for the big-bang powered Desmosedici GP10, which Casey Stoner and Nicky Hayden will use during the 2010 MotoGP season.

"This bike is completely new so it is necessary for us to try as many new parts and set-up combinations as we can, in order to make the correct decision on what specification to use for the racing season," team manager Vittoriano Guareschi told Crash.net after day one of the second Sepang test, moments after concluding a phone debrief with technical head Filippo Preziosi.

"We tried another new swingarm today - the fourth so far this year - to help improve the turning on corner exit which Casey spoke about at the last test. We also tried some changes to the shock and weight distribution - moving weight to the front and the back - pus some small changes to the electronics."

2010 pre-season testing has now reached its halfway point, with three days complete and another three days - one more at Sepang (on Friday) and then two more days at Qatar - before the racing season begins.

"Now the final specification of this bike is more clear," said Guareschi. "We know what we want and I think tomorrow [Friday] we will keep the best points of what we have found so far and put everything together in one bike.

"We didn't get to try the new Bridgestone tyres today because we had so many new parts to test. But many riders used the new tyres and improved their time a lot," he added.

Stoner and a weakened Hayden, following recent arm surgery, finished day one in second and eleventh places.

Stoner was just 0.151sec behind reigning champion Valentino Rossi, who has been fastest on all three days of 2010 testing so far.

"I listen to my riders and they say they are happy," said Guareschi, an ex-racer and long time Ducati MotoGP test rider who was promoted to team manager at the end of last season. "So for me this is good."
