Simon makes MotoGP debut

Reigning 125cc world champion Julian Simon set impressive lap times during a surprise MotoGP debut for the Ducati test team at Jerez this week.

With factory test rider Franco Battaini injured, and former test rider Vittoriano Guareschi occupied with team management duties at Qatar, Simon got the surprise offer to try the Desmosedici GP10 via his team manager Jorge Martinez 'Aspar'.

Aspar uses Ducati machinery for his MotoGP team and will run Simon in Moto2 this year.

During two days at the Spanish Grand Prix circuit, Simon lapped consistently in the 1min 41sec mark, according to information released by the Jerez circuit.

The fastest race lap at the 2009 event was a 1min 39.818sec by Valentino Rossi (Yamaha) and the slowest a 1min 42.036sec by factory Ducati rider Nicky Hayden.
