Redding transforms fortunes at Jerez

Scott Redding looked in real trouble after finishing the first two official Moto2 test sessions just 28th and 30th fastest.

But Redding, winner of his home British 125cc grand prix in 2008, enjoyed a remarkable transformation in fortunes at the final Jerez Moto2 test - setting the fourth fastest overall lap time!

And it was no one-off lap.

The 17-year-old was ranked ninth, second and fourth over the three days at the Spanish Grand Prix circuit, with his best lap time - which was just 0.35sec behind pace setter Claudio Corti - coming on the third and final day.

Redding put the gains downs to a change of riding style, the groundwork for which was laid during a private two-day test at Jerez, combined with some useful changes to the set-up of his Marc VDS Racing-run Suter motorcycle

"It's all come together during the last two tests here in Jerez and, I'm glad to say, we're now well and truly on the pace,” smiled the young Briton, looking to rebound from a tough 2009 season, which he finished just 15th in the 125cc series.

“We've made some big steps forward with the set-up of the bike, but the biggest improvement has come from me changing my riding style; I was trying to ride the bike like a 125cc machine, when it requires a very different style to get the best from it.

“Having been in the top five on the timesheet throughout these three days, we head for the first race in Qatar knowing that we're on the pace, but I'm determined not to be over confident.

“We'll be aiming for a top ten finish but, if I'm honest, I think top five could be a possibility if everything comes together for us. I just can't wait to get there and get the season started now!" he added.

Team manager and former Kawasaki MotoGP team boss Michael Bartholemy admitted it had initially been a tough start for Redding and praised him for the 'great job' in turning things around.

"Scott initially struggled to get the best from the bike, but he's done a great job of adapting his riding style during the last two outings at Jerez, steadily progressing up the timesheets as a result,” said Bartholemy.

This is why I believe that Redding's future is going to be bigger than Smith's in British motorcyling. Smith is still stuck on a 125's and this will be his 5th season!
