Moto2: Tomizawa takes Jerez pole

Shoya Tomizawa followed up his first grand prix victory in the inaugural Moto2 race at Qatar, with his first world championship pole at Jerez on Saturday - despite a fall.

The Japanese tumbled from his Technomag-CIP (Suter) at turn two with 20 minutes to go, and was unable to improve despite getting back out on track.

That almost cost Tomizawa dear as home hero Julian Simon got within 0.002sec of pole on his final lap for the Aspar team, with fellow Spaniard Toni Elias (Gresini-Moriwaki) defying his injuries to claim third - just 0.052sec from pole.

Yuki Takahashi made it four different machines on the front row with fourth place for Tech 3, a mere 0.091sec from pole, which bumped Swiss star Thomas Luthi to fifth for Interwetten Moriwaki.

While Tomizawa was again up front, his fellow Qatar podium finishers Alex Debon and Jules Cluzel were less lucky.

Debon, fastest on Friday with his FTR, lost time due to a mechanical problem and will start 13th, with Cluzel one place behind him for Forward Racing (Suter).

But they were both less than half a second from pole on a day when the top 20 riders were covered by just 0.811sec!

Qualifying - Jerez:

1. Tomizawa (Suter) 1min 44.372sec
2. Simon (RSV) +0.002s
3. Elias (Moriwaki) +0.052s
4. Takahashi (Tech 3) +0.091s
5. Luthi (Moriwaki) +0.201s
6. Bradl (Suter) +0.259s

8. Gadea (Pons Kalex) +0.322s
9. Noyes (Promoharris) +0.340s
10. Corsi (MotoBI) +0.350s

27. Redding (Suter) +1.219s

Is Crash somehow contractually bound to only give the top ten plus the British riders of Moto2/250s and 125s? It's always annoying but when the headline is about the top twenty it's just plain weird.
