Stoner not worried by slow start

Casey Stoner may only sit eighth in the 2010 MotoGP World Championship standings after two rounds, but he's not about to hit the panic button.

“Things have worked out the way they have. We've never really had a great race at Jerez and unfortunately I made my big mistake this year in Qatar,” said Stoner, speaking during Thursday's pre-event press conference for the French Grand prix.

“Things look a lot worse than they really are,” insisted the Australian, who has eleven points compared with 45 for title leader Jorge Lorenzo. “We struggled at Jerez to fix the front end problem, but we're pretty sure we had the same issues last year with that same compound of front tyre so that's something we need to look at more.

“But we're quite confident coming here because, with the new engine characteristics, it should be a black and white difference compared with in the past. I've always qualified quite well, but just never put things together in the race. The weather has usually been changeable and I broke down in [2008].

“I hope we can have a good weekend. We've always been quite fast here and I'm just looking forward to trying to get things back on track.”

Meanwhile, looking beyond this weekend, the Australian refused to be drawn on rumours that he may move to Honda for 2011.

“We were asked questions [about next year] right at the beginning of the season, at our team launch,” said Stoner. “The questions we're already being asked so early then. All the questions used to start around mid-season.

“It's great to be honest when you already have the contract signed because nobody asks you the questions. But that's just the way things are going this year and everybody does seem to be talking early and everybody does seem to be interested a lot earlier.”
