New MotoGP engine rule hasn't cost us power, says Edwards

Experienced MotoGP stalwart Colin Edwards offers his thoughts on the six engine-limit in the premier class in 2010 - as well as revealing his hopes for a podium finish for Tech3 Yamaha next time out at Mugello...
Reflecting upon the new restriction on engines in MotoGP 2010, Colin Edwards has revealed that there has been no reduction in power and if anything improved speed and reliability – although he concedes riders are 'always swapping and changing and trying to keep as few miles as possible'.

There is a limit of six engines per rider this season, and as a competitor now into his eighth year in the premier class, Edwards is well-placed to comment upon the effect that has had. The American has used two motors in the three outings to-date in 2010 at Losail, Jerez and Le Mans – and he is confident that thus far at least, there have been no unwelcome repercussions from the change to the technical regulations.

“We are always swapping and changing and trying to keep as few miles as possible on all the engines,” the Texan told the official MotoGP website. “The engines have been made more reliable and faster, and I think it's good – it doesn't feel like we've lost any power, not yet anyway.

“We are happy with the engine; it seems like everybody is in the same boat, so we go with it. We're only at the third race, though, so ask me in 14 or 15 races and then we'll see!”

Edwards is also eagerly anticipating improvements to the electronics package on his Monster Tech3 Yamaha M1-YZR prototype, with whose set-up he has not been entirely happy since the beginning of the campaign. With progress on that side of things, the 36-year-old is hopeful of maintaining his strong previous form at Mugello in the forthcoming Gran Premio d'Italia in just over a week's time.

“I don't know what Yamaha want me to say or not to say, but obviously they are working all the time on trying to make the electronics better,” he acknowledged. “We have a good setting that we know works, but we are always trying to improve it and I think we still have a few more things we need to test before we probably start running the new stuff.

“In Italy we had a pretty good flag-to-flag race last year. We were in twelfth and came back to finish sixth. If it is completely dry this year, that would be great! I have never been on the podium at Mugello, so to do that this year would be fantastic.”
