After a twelfth place at Silverstone, Andrea Iannone returned to the kind of form that swept him to victory at Mugello, by being fastest in Thursday practice for the Dutch Moto2 grand prix at Assen.

The Fimmco Speedup rider commanded most of the hour, which he finished with an advantage of 0.222sec over title leader Toni Elias.

Gresini Moriwaki rider Elias, one of only two riders to score points at all five Moto2 rounds this year (the other being Sergio Gadea), also made a return to front-running form, after being off the podium at the past two races.

There was a surprise in third in the form of Thai rider Ratthapark Wilairot, riding a Bimota chassis, while second in the champion Shoya Tomizawa claimed fourth for Technomag-CIP (Suter).

Silverstone winner Jules Cluzel fell with a minute to go and finished the session in fifth, one place ahead of Forward Racing (Suter) team-mate Claudio Corti.
