Marc Marquez, on pole at the last two races and winner of the last three, began his quest for a first ever home win by topping the Friday 125cc free practice timesheets for the Catalan Grand Prix.

The Ajo Red Bull Derbi rider recorded a best time of 1min 51.219sec on his 22nd of 25 laps, with Englishman Bradley Smith closing to within 0.246sec on his own 22nd (and final) lap of the one hour session.

Smith Aspar Aprilia team-mate and title leader, Nicolas Terol, was 0.764sec from Marquez in third while Pol Espargaro - the most 'local' of the Spanish stars - suffered a fall with 22 minutes to go on his way to fourth place.

The Tuenti Derbi rider, who starts round seven just three points from Terol, was the final rider within two seconds of Marquez, with his fifth fastest team-mate Efren Vasquez 2.052sec from the front.
