125: Marquez penalised

125cc championship Marc Marquez has been demoted from fifth to tenth for cutting the track at the end of Sunday's Indianapolis Grand Prix.

Marquez fell from a safe lead on lap nine of the race, then charged back up the order from 14th to try and limit the title damage.

But the Spaniard ran wide early on the penultimate lap, straight-lining the course and missing several turns.

Marquez didn't gain any places, remaining eighth - and didn't gain much time - as he rejoined just behind the pack fighting for fifth.

Marquez then overtook the riders ahead and claimed fifth.

An investigation was launched immediately after the chequered flag and Race Direction has now imposed a 20 second penalty on Marquez, dropping him to tenth.

Marquez retains the championship lead heading into next weekend's Misano round, but is now just four points in front of Indy winner Nico Terol and five clear of Pol Espargaro, third on Sunday.

Revised race results - Indianapolis:

1. Terol (Aprilia) 23 laps
2. Cortese (Derbi) +4.995s
3. Espargaro (Derbi) +10.856s
4. Vazquez (Derbi) +15.402s

8. Moncayo (Aprilia) +26.797s

On the other hand, if you screw up badly enough that you run off course, you should lose time. Running off track and rejoining right where you left off isn't exactly fair to the riders that didn't make a mistake. Tough call.
