Moto2: Iannone fastest in first Moto2 practice

Andrea Iannone picked up where he left off at Motorland Aragon with the fastest time in the first of three practice sessions, as Moto2 kicked off proceedings ahead of the inaugural Aragon Grand Prix.

The Italian, who was fastest at the unofficial test around the Spanish circuit back in July, continued to stamp his authority as he edged out Julian Simon - his rival for second place in the standings.

Simon had held the fastest time for much of the session before Iannone sneaked ahead by a mere 0.061secs, the pair in turn chased closely by Claudio Corti on the Forward Racing machine.

Making his second Moto2 appearance this season, wild-card Kev Coghlan was a fine fourth fastest on the Joe Darcey FTR bike, the Briton making the most of his experience around Motorland Aragon as a result of his time in the Spanish-based CEV Buckler series. He was just under half a second off the leaders.

Runaway championship leader and local favourite Toni Elias was fifth fastest, ahead of Gabor Talmacsi, Sergio Gadea and Santiago Hernandez – the latter, brother of Moto2 regular Yonny, an impressive eighth fastest as he arrives in place of Lukas Pesek at Matteoni CP Racing.

Completing the top ten were Thomas Luthi and Simone Corsi, while Scott Redding and Alex de Angelis returned to action in 11th and 23rd respectively.

Good solid start by Scott in 11th.. stick in their kid and push to the front. Simone is getting consistant of late and could be a real contender next year for the title that this year must be all but engraved with Tony Elias name on it!!
