Moto2: Elias can win title this weekend

Toni Elias has the first of five chances to wrap up the inaugural Moto2 World Championship, and his first ever world title, at Motegi in Japan this weekend.

Elias starts round 13 with a 76 point lead over Julian Simon, although Andrea Iannone (80 points behind), Thomas Luthi (94 points behind) and Simone Corsi (116 points behind) also remain in mathematical contention.

It's a very slim chance, but if Elias can leave Motegi with a lead of 101 points over second position then he will be champion with four rounds to go.

To do that Elias must win at Motegi and then see how many points his remaining title rivals score.

Former MotoGP race winner Elias, who rides for the Gresini Moriwaki team, is the only rider to finish in the points at every round and has taken six race wins so far this season.

Elias, who made his full time grand prix debut in 2000, has never previously finished higher than third in a world championship (125cc in 2001 and 250cc in 2003).

What is it with the posters on here.. calling Toni a midfielder.. he finished 7th in a tough field in MotoGP and much tougher than this years..there are only a few Rossi, Pedrosa, Lorenzo and Stoner who are race winners, the rest therefore are the first of the losers. I prefer to watch Toni than many of the current entries in MotoGP.. the start of last season the Honda was a dog, as Dani will confirm.. his results were also crap at the start of the season. This year in a packed and dangerous field he has kept his head and avoided incident.. Go Toni, silence the critics..

Calvin, Google "In Defense of Toni Elias", and read the article from Motomatters.com. Many of you are clueless as to what type of "chance" Elias has had in GP. Posted by zx
