Moto2 riders got the best of the weather at Estoril on Friday, riding in sunny conditions on a fast drying track after earlier rain storms.
Wet tyres were required for most of the session, but Gabor Talmacsi made the late switch to slicks and briefly pulled a huge lead on the field, before Aspar's Julian Simon closed the Speed Up rider's advantage down to 0.388sec at the flag.
New world champion Toni Elias, riding at the scene of his epic 2006 MotoGP race win, was third fastest and the final rider within one-second of the Hungarian.
Newly crowned double World Supersport champion Kenan Sofuoglu made his grand prix debut today, riding for the Technomag-CIP (Suter) team in place of the late Shoya Tomizawa.
The Turkish star, who is seeking a full time grand prix ride for 2011, was second early in the session and briefly returned to the runner-up spot in the closing stages on his way to fourth place, 1.033sec behind Talmacsi. Estoril is not part of the World Supersport Championship.
Tech 3's Raffaele de Rosa and Phillip Island winner Alex de Angelis (JiR) were fifth and sixth, with early session leader Yonny Hernandez (BQR) dropping to seventh as track conditions improved.
