Defeated Melandri ready for MotoGP swansong

3 November 2010

After 132 races and five race wins, Marco Melandri will bid farewell to MotoGP at this weekend's Valencia Grand Prix – not that he is expecting to end his eight-year tenure in the series on a high…

The Italian, who made his MotoGP aboard a Yamaha in 2003, will return to the Japanese manufacturer in 2011, albeit in a World Superbike capacity after signing with the Sterilgarda-backed squad back in September.

In the meantime, he is looking to go out on a high with Gresini Honda, though he confesses that – after a series of issues throughout the season – he doesn't anticipate being able to 'do anything'.

“In Portugal I had yet another disappointing day and I can't even begin to explain the reasons why we have yet to work things out. We have been trying in vain and I am so bitterly disappointed about it.

“Valencia is our last chance to salvage something from a season to forget and I will try my hardest. I like the track and I won here in 250 and MotoGP but the chances of us doing anything this weekend are very small and that upsets me.”

During his time in MotoGP, Melandri raced with Yamaha, Honda, Ducati and Kawasaki (under the Hayate banner), but endured differing fortunes during that time. His best season was in 2005 with Gresini when he finished the season as runner-up to Valentino Rossi following two end-of-season wins.
