Bradley Smith began his final race weekend in the 125cc class by outpacing title contenders Marc Marquez and Nico Terol during Friday practice for the Valencia season finale.

Smith finished the afternoon 0.103s clear of Ajo Derbi rider Marquez, with Smith's Aspar Aprilia team-mate Terol 0.398s behind the Englishman in third.

World championship leader Marquez holds a 17-point advantage over fellow Spaniard Terol heading into Sunday's title showdown. Neither rider has been a world champion before.

If Marquez wins the race on Sunday he will match the all-time 125cc record of eleven wins in a season, set by Valentino Rossi in 1997.

Fourth fastest was Tuenti Derbi's Efren Vasquez, with team-mate and former title contender Pol Espargaro in fifth.
