Moto2: de Angelis to stay with JiR in 2011
29 November 2010
The 2011 Moto2 grid is continuing to shape up with the announcement that Alex de Angelis will return next season with Team JiR.
The Sammarinese competitor, who rode with Gresini Honda in MotoGP during 2008 and 2009, endured a fractured 2010 as he struggled to find his form until the latter stages of the season.
Having lost his MotoGP ride, de Angelis entered Moto2 as one of the favourites for the title but struggled during the early rounds aboard the Team Scot Force-Up bike. Accepting a call to ride the Interwetten Honda MotoGP machine in place of the injured Hiroshi Aoyama, de Angelis found himself out of a ride when that tenure ended.
Nonetheless, he managed to secure a spot at JiR for the final seven races, securing a much-needed victory at Phillip Island, plus two further podiums.
As such, despite rumours he was plotting a World Superbike move, de Angelis will stick with both the category and the team for 2011.
“I'm very satisfied with the agreement we have found with JiR for 2011,” he said. “I have found positive surroundings and a professional team and the MotoBI has shown since the very beginning it can be very competitive. Consequently it has given us the relevant excellent results. JiR's project is a good project, I feel confident going on my winter vacation and I have big expectations for 2011.
“The Championship forces us to a winter break without being allowed to test therefore I'll have some rest and start my physical training. I have already given the team my evaluations on which technical course to follow during winter, also supported by the data they collected in 2010. Of course competitors will develop as well, but we stay focused on our project to arrive highly competitive to next year.”
Despite taking until the 14th round of the season to finish any higher than tenth, de Angelis would end the 2010 season a respectable 11th in the standings.
