Repsol Honda's Andrea Dovizioso was delighted with his performance during day two of the Sepang test, but remains concerned at how long it takes him to reach his peak.
The Italian finished Wednesday in fourth position with a best lap time of 2min 1.512sec.
That was 0.742sec slower than the best lap by team-mate Dani Pedrosa, but only 0.078sec behind HRC's new signing Casey Stoner (second).
Pedrosa and Stoner stayed on the 2010 front forks, while Dovizioso tested the 2011 forks.
“Looking at all the lap times, from all the riders today, I'm one of the fastest,” Dovi declared.
“Maybe Dani [who only broke 2mins 2.1sec with his best lap] is a little bit faster. Maybe for him it is a little bit easier. But the lap times are very close and nobody went under 2.2 easily.
“So I'm really happy about our speed. Still it is not enough because, like I thought, many riders will be very strong this year. Not just one. So we are fast, but we need to be stronger.
“By that I mean it is not so easy for me to make the really good lap time and for qualifying this is so important.
“In the race I'm normally better than in practice, but I need to be fast straight away if I want to fight for the lead.
“So we tried some set-up changes, not to go faster, but to have more margin to play with.
“We have many more parts to try, but to be honest maybe we might not have enough time or energy to try everything. But if we don't try them in this test we will try in the next.
“Tomorrow we have to do some more set-up of the clutch and try some tyres, but I'm really happy about our competitiveness.”
