125: Faubel ends pre-season on top

Hector Faubel leads Aspar Aprilia one-two at end of final pre-season 125cc test.
125cc returnee Hector Faubel halted Aspar Aprilia team-mate Nico Tero's perfect Jerez form during Sunday's third and final day at the last pre-season test of 2011.

Faubel, who rode for Marc VDS in Moto2 last year, is back on a two-stroke for what will be the final 125cc season before the class changes to Moto3 250cc four-strokes.

Faubel's last season in 125s was back in 2007, when he finished second in the championship for Aspar, which is the same result as Terol managed for Aspar last season.

Terol had led the first two days of testing at Jerez, while Faubel rose from 15th on Friday's rain interrupted opening day, to third on Saturday and then first, by 0.120sec over Terol, on Sunday.

Faubel's best time came at the end of a short stint of just two flying laps, while fellow Spaniard Terol set his best on lap three of four fast laps.

Racing Team Germany Aprilia rider Sandro Cortese got closest to the pair with a best lap 0.392sec from Faubel, with fellow German Jonas Folger in fourth for Red Bull Ajo Aprilia.

Maverick Vinales gave the Paris Hilton-backed team a strong end to the pre-season with fifth place, with Miguel Oliveira (Andalucia Cajasol Aprilia) and Ajo Derbi team-mates Efren Vasquez and Johann Zarco the final riders within one-second of Faubel.

Completing the top ten were Vinales' team-mate Sergio Gadea and Andalucia Banca Civica Aprilia rider Alberto Moncayo.

The top British rider was Folger's team-mate Danny Kent, who was twelfth overall ahead of his first full grand prix season, with countryman and fellow rookie Taylor Mackenzie just behind him for Phonica Racing Aprilia.

Danny Webb, now by far the most experienced Brit in the class, was 21st for the new Mahindra Racing team.

The first race of the new season takes place at Losail, Qatar, on the evening of March 20.
