Abu Dhabi's lavish Yas Marina Circuit expects to join the
MotoGP World Championship calendar within the next two years, and is learning towards the later date.
"The big decision for us is whether we would do [the first
MotoGP event] for 2012 or 2013,"
TheNational.ae reports Richard Cregan, Chief Executive Officer of Yas Marina Circuit, as saying.
"We're looking at 2013 for the MotoGP, to be honest, to give us breathing space [to] develop what we have already started like the [racing] school and also the drag racing and the NHRA [National Hot Rod Association] licences.
"We need to give ourselves a little bit of time to develop those, and then in 2013 we can add the MotoGP, that would be the ideal situation."
The Yas Marina Circuit was built for F1 and held its first four-wheel grand prix in 2009.
It remains the only twilight race on the calendar, starting just before sunset on a naturally lit track, before finishing under floodlights.
The circuit has many different configurations, but will still need some safety alterations for MotoGP.
But the track could combine such modifications with changes to help improve overtaking opportunities for F1.
Qatar, MotoGP's only night race, is presently the only motorcycle grand prix held in the Middle East.
The Losail Circuit has expressed interest in hosting an F1 race.
