Gresini Moriwaki's Yuki Takahashi - riding less than a week after the death of his brother and fellow racer Koki in a road accident - was fastest during Friday free practice for the Portuguese Moto2 Grand Prix at Estoril.

The Japanese finished the dry morning session 0.011sec ahead of Interwetten Suter's Thomas Luthi, with reigning 125cc world champion Marc Marquez (Repsol) third and Briton Scott Redding (Marc VDS) fourth.

Those morning times proved to be the fastest of the day when the forecast rain arrived just before the afternoon session.

Light rain fell intermittently thereafter, keeping half of the 40 riders in the pits.

World championship leader Andrea Iannone (Speed Master Suter) was ninth in the dry and one of those that didn't ride in the wet - when Takahashi was again fastest after toppling Ricky Cardus on his very last lap.

Takahashi's best afternoon lap was a 1min 51.606sec.
