16-year-old race-winning rookie Maverick Vinales took his first grand prix pole position, during qualifying for round six at Silverstone on Saturday.
World Championship leader Nico Terol had been almost one-second clear halfway through the 40-minute session - but was then reeled in and outpaced by Vinales with just two minutes to go.
Terol, fought back, but Vinales - who beat Terol to victory at Le Mans – gave the Paris Hilton Racing team pole position by just 0.036sec.
Johann Zarco, denied his first grand prix victory after a penalty at Catalunya last weekend, will complete the front row in third for the Ajo Derbi team. The Frenchman was over half a second slower than Vinales.
Danny Kent was the top British rider, in twelfth place for Red Bull Ajo Aprilia.
