As predicted, after a mixed Friday and dry Saturday, rain has returned to Silverstone for race day.

Steady rain fell from grey skies onto an already drenched track throughout the 20-minute MotoGP warm-up session, which ended with Casey Stoner once again on top of the timesheets - as he has been all weekend.

In fact, despite the contrast in conditions, three of the top five riders matched their qualifying positions - Stoner, Ben Spies (4th) and Andrea Dovizioso (5th) - while second and third on the grid, Marco Simoncelli and Jorge Lorenzo, swapped places.

Stoner's best lap was a 2min 19.071sec, which compares with the Repsol Honda rider's dry pole time of 2min 2.020sec. Lorenzo's Yamaha was 0.428sec slower, with Simoncelli's Gresini Honda +1.528sec.

Spies (Yamaha) and Dovizioso (Honda) were over two-seconds from Stoner, with sixth placed Alvaro Bautista (Suzuki) 4.493sec behind!

Stoner had been 15th and last with just five minutes remaining, before putting in a typically aggressive string of ever faster laps.

Ducati riders Randy de Puniet and then Valentino Rossi - who will start just 13th on the grid - both suffered lowside falls under braking for the final turn.

Seventh at the time of his tumble, Rossi finished the session in eighth place, but 5.5sec behind Stoner.

Rookie Karel Abraham (seventh) was once again the top Desmosedici rider, as he had been in qualifying.

Rossi's team-mate Nicky Hayden was ninth while LCR Honda's Toni Elias made use of the conditions for tenth.

Just 15 riders will start this afternoon's race, with home hero Cal Crutchlow joining Dani Pedrosa in being sidelined by a broken collarbone.

MotoGP will be the second race of the day, after Moto2 and before the 125cc grand prix.

Lorenzo won the only wet race so far this year, during round two at Jerez, in which Rossi clashed with Stoner and Simoncelli fell from the lead.
