Spies: I hit the wall before I knew it

"I hit my back pretty badly, my back protector is really busted up, but it did its job" - Ben Spies.
Ben Spies was lucky to escape serious injury when he 'hit a wall' after falling during Sunday's wet British MotoGP at Silverstone.

The Factory Yamaha rider, who took his first grand prix podium in last year's event, was involved in a battle with countrymen Nicky Hayden and Colin Edwards for fifth in the early stages of the race.

Settling into sixth, Spies' race came to a sudden end on lap 8 of 20 when he fell going into turn one, crossing the gravel and hitting the wall.

The American was taken directly to the medical centre for precautionary scans of his back and neck and subsequently given the all clear.

"The track was really wet, when I hit the brakes going into turn one the front just dropped away and I hit the wall before I knew it.

"I hit my back pretty badly, my back protector is really busted up, but it did its job," said Spies.

"I'm really sore and will probably need a big cushion for a few days but I'm happy it wasn't worse. We'll take a few days to relax and recover then come back fighting at Assen.”

The accident marked the third DNF in six starts for Spies, whose team-mate Jorge Lorenzo also crashed out on Sunday.

My only comment is how come a rider hits a wall in a FIM sanctioned circuit where millions or Euros are being thrown at? Have these people ever heard about "Air Fence" You never assume a certain area can't be reached by a stray rider or vehicle by dry standards, you have to use wet conditions as standard, I've seen Hayden and Pedrosa hit Air Fence in wet crashes at very high speeds because the asphalt friction is less and the gravel gets hardened in wet conditions. Last year Lascorz also had a severe accident in a Silverstone wall, these people need to do a safety check all over again.

Ben crashed right in front of me on Sunday, he went down so quickly and was travelling so fast that I thought it would have had much more serious consequences! Speedy recovery Ben!!
