Jorge Lorenzo delivered the fastest ever two-wheel lap of the Mugello circuit during Saturday morning's final free practice session for the Italian MotoGP.
Yamaha's reigning world champion, winner of one race this season, returned to the top of the FP3 timesheets by 0.331sec over home hero Marco Simoncelli on his penultimate lap of the session.
Simoncelli, fastest on Friday for Honda Gresini, was once again a regular pace setter during the 45-minutes, with Repsol Honda's world championship leader Casey Stoner also making an appearance at the top on his way to third (+0.654sec).
Lorenzo's team-mate Ben Spies and Tech 3 Yamaha's Colin Edwards were the final riders within one-second of the top, with Andrea Dovizioso - leader of the damp Friday afternoon session - sixth and slower than yesterday.
The only other rider not to improve this morning was Dovizioso and Stoner's team-mate Dani Pedrosa, making his MotoGP comeback from a broken collarbone this weekend, who finished the session in twelfth.
The top Ducati rider was once again Nicky Hayden, the American claiming seventh place (+1.676sec) and narrowly avoiding a hare that ran across the track.
For team-mate and Italian superstar Valentino Rossi, who suffered electrical problems in Friday morning practice, FP3 was the first full session of the weekend.
The 2002-2008 Mugello winner, who broke his leg on Saturday morning at last year's event, finished just behind Hayden in eighth (+1.809sec).
Worryingly for Rossi and Ducati, the seven time MotoGP champion was seen being pushed down pitlane once again - at the very end of the session - suggesting more electrical problems.
As traditional for Saturday morning at the Italian GP, Rossi unveiled a special helmet design – with a large eyeball painted on top!
Behind Rossi, Randy de Puniet enjoyed a promising session in ninth for Pramac Ducati, with Rizla Suzuki's Alvaro Bautista completing the top ten.
Pramac Ducati's Loris Capirossi is missing his home event after being injured in qualifying for last weekend's Assen round.
The Mugello circuit has been resurfaced for this weekend's event.
