A fast early lap during a rain-interrupted session handed Johann Zarco his first grand prix pole position, during qualifying for Sunday's 125cc Italian Grand Prix at Mugello.
After dazzling sunshine this morning, clouds gathered for the 40-minute qualifying session, with spots of rain then sending riders back to the pits during the middle stages.
Ajo Derbi rider Zarco, denied a debut grand prix victory after being penalised in Catalunya, was holding pole by a huge 1.632sec from RW Aprilia's Luis Salom at the time of the interruption - and more rain meant qualifying positions remained static to the chequered flag.
Paris Hilton Racing's Sergio Gadea will complete Sunday's front row, with Zarco's team-mate Efren Vasquez heading row two.
World championship leader Nico Terol, who sat out last weekend's Assen round due to a finger injury, qualified fifth for Aspar Aprilia with rookie double race-winner Maverick Vinales seventh, behind Sandro Cortese.
Terol has a 27 point over Jonas Folger heading into Sunday's race, but Folger will start just 21st after losing out to the weather.
