Marco Simoncelli and countryman Andrea Dovizioso held the top two positions during a bright and sunny warm-up session for the Italian MotoGP at Mugello.
Simoncelli moved ahead of Dovizioso's Repsol Honda by just 0.008sec on his last lap of the 20-minute session, with world championship leader and pole sitter Casey Stoner and Assen winner Ben Spies completing a top four covered by just 0.082sec.
Spies' Factory Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo was 0.366sec down on Simoncelli in fifth, with the returning Dani Pedrosa sixth (+0.660sec) and Nicky Hayden once again the top Ducati in seventh (+0.718sec).
Tech 3 Yamaha's Coin Edward was the leading non-factory bike rider in eighth, and the final rider within one-second of Simoncelli. Mugello hero Valentino Rossi was ninth on his Ducati GP11.1 with Simoncelli's Gresini Honda' team-mate Aoyama comepleting the top ten.
Pramac Ducati's Loris Capirossi is missing his home event after being injured in qualifying for last weekend's Assen round.
The Mugello circuit has been resurfaced for this weekend's event.
