Reigning 125cc world champion Marc Marquez took his third pole of the season during qualifying for the German Moto2 Grand Prix at the Sachsenring on Saturday.

Repsol Suter rider Marquez, winner of the last two events and now second in the championship, held off points leader and local star Stefan Bradl by 0.129sec, with Aleix Espargaro making it two Kalex riders on the front row for the manufacturers' home event.

Michele Pirro enjoyed his best qualifying as a Moto2 rider with fourth for Gresini Moriwaki, with Julian Simon a brave fifth for Aspar Suter on his comeback from a broken leg.

Alex de Angelis will complete row two for the JiR MotoBI team.

Tech 3's Bradley Smith twice ran off track at high-speed, the Englishman saved the first mishap, but tagged the airfence in the second and will start ninth on the grid. Rookie Smith has finished on the podium for the last three rounds.

Bradl, winner of four races this year, has a 52-point lead over triple winner Marquez heading into Sunday's race.
