Lorenzo ruled out of Sepang

Jorge Lorenzo ruled out of next weekend's Malaysian MotoGP.
Jorge Lorenzo's underwent successful surgery in Melbourne on Sunday evening to repair damage to his finger (pictured).

The surgeon was able to save the nerves and tendons of the injured fourth finger (left hand), as a result no functionality will be lost in either the finger or the hand.

Unfortunately an extended recovery time will be required and so Yamaha's outgoing world champion will not race in next weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang.

A decision on the season-ending Valencia Grand Prix will be made dependent on Lorenzo's condition after his return to Barcelona.

Lorenzo lost the end of his finger in a morning warm-up crash for the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island. His absence from the race helped Casey Stoner to wrap up the 2011 world title.

Team-mate Ben Spies also missed the race, after a knock to the head in qualifying.

Bitterly disappointed for Jorge today. This was his last real hope to make a difference to the result of the championship. No point in him taking risks by riding now the title is lost.I hope he recovers quickly and is not too disheartened. He fought a good campaign this year and can be proud of his title defence.Get well soon Jorge.

Gutted for Jorge Lorenzo, but he did us proud and kept's Casey honest with some stunning rides this season. Take it easy and take the year off, get yourself better and fit for next year. All the best Jorge
