Crutchlow aiming to secure 'top rookie' title

"MotoGP lost an amazing character and a phenomenally gifted rider and my thoughts and prayers are with Marco's family and friends" – Cal Crutchlow.
Cal Crutchlow's first season of grand prix racing will conclude at Valencia this weekend, an event the Briton will begin with a single point advantage over Karel Abraham in the rookie of the year contest.

The Valencia weekend will be dominated by memories of Marco Simoncelli and Crutchlow hopes to put on a good show to honour the Italian.

“This weekend isn't going to be easy for anybody in the paddock after Marco's accident in Malaysia, but racing is the best way we can honour him and I'm sure that is definitely what he would have wanted," said Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider Crutchlow.

"MotoGP lost an amazing character and a phenomenally gifted rider and my thoughts and prayers are with Marco's family and friends. All of us will go out this weekend determined to put on a good show that Marco would be proud of.

"I also want to wish Colin [Edwards] a speedy recovery and I'm looking forward to seeing him back on track soon."

If Crutchlow, 13th in the championship, can keep his advantage over Abraham this weekend he will follow in the footsteps of Tech 3 predecessor Ben Spies in scooping the top rookie award.

"Valencia was the first place I rode the Yamaha YZR-M1 a year ago and I've come on leaps and bounds since then, so hopefully I can finish the season on a high," he said.

"The Rookie of the Year title is at stake and I'll be proud to win it after a close battle with Karel all season. I'm also looking forward to testing the new Yamaha 1000cc bike next week.

"The bike has been very impressive in Brno and Misano and I'm really excited to see what 2012 has in store.”

Double American Superbike champion Josh Hayes will ride in place of Edwards, who was injured during Simoncelli's fatal accident at Sepang.

In MCN this week Cal said he n Karel were right behind Sics accident and saw clearly how bad it was and how his helmet came off but wouldnt go into detail cos too upsetting and unneccesary. I think all the riders have been hit hard by Sics death and its going to haunt them for a very long time.

Hope Cal and Karel both finish in the top 10!! With the field being depleted, they have a good chance at a strong finish. The moment of noise, a grand gesture to honor Super SIC! Hope all three races are epic!!
