125: Terol heads for home title showdown

3 November 2011

Despite losing points to Johann Zarco at the last three rounds, Nico Terol takes a 20 point lead into this weekend's Valencia title decider.

The Aspar Aprilia rider can therefore wrap up his first world crown, and the last ever for the 125cc class, by finishing at least eleventh in front of his home fans - even if Zarco wins.

If the Zarco doesn't win then Terol will be champion regardless, since a tie - second place for Zarco and no points for Terol - would see the title go to Terol due to his eight wins compared with one for Zarco.

"I was off the podium [in Malaysia], but I still have a 20-point advantage that is large enough for me to be able to enjoy the weekend a little with my family and friends," said Terol, title runner-up to Marc Marquez last season.

"I know the circuit well and have ridden here since I was little, and so it will be a special weekend.

"I want to enjoy every practice session and every lap of the race, and there is no secret as to what my aim is: I'm going to look to get a good start to avoid surprises later on, establish a gap and then set the pace, just like Marc Marquez did last year [who won the title with fourth place].

"I won't be thinking about victory, because most of our work is already done. What I have to do now is finish off the job and ride an intelligent race."

This weekend will be the fifth time that the 125cc world title has been settled in Valencia, since it became the final event on the calendar in 2002.

Moto3 will replace 125cc next season.
