de Angelis moving 'Forward' in 2012
Ex-Gresini Honda MotoGP rider Alex de Angelis will defect to Forward Suter for a crack at the 2012 Moto2 World Championship.
Former MotoGP rider Alex de Angelis will continue in Moto2 next season after penning a deal with NGM Forward Racing for the 2012 season.
The Sammarinese, who rode for Gresini Honda at MotoGP level in 2008 and 2009, has been part of the Moto2 fraternity since it began in 2010, notwithstanding a brief return to the premier category with Interwetten Honda when he replaced the injured Hiroshi Aoyama.
Despite a difficult start to his new foray, a mid-season switch to JiR MotoBI would see de Angelis win his first race at Australia, prompting him to stay on with the team for a full season in 2011.
Currently the only rider on the MotoBI chassis, de Angelis has shown strong form in 2011, winning again at Phillip Island, and comes into the final event of the season at Valencia disputing third in the standings.
However, de Angelis will embark on a new challenge in 2012 by switching to NGM Mobile Forward Racing, where he will ride a Suter for the first time. For team chairman Giovanni Cuzari, de Angelis's acquisition is an exciting development, not least because it will go beyond his participation in Moto2.
"Alex is not just a rider for me, but since many years also a dear friend and I always hoped to build a team with him. Beside the mutual admiration which we share, also the passion for rally racing unites us and for sure Alex will participate in all the 4-wheel events we organize.
“Therefore, for me, this agreement is the realization of a small dream and personally I'm convinced that it is the right choice to aspire to the best possible results in 2012, because actually we cannot have lower expectations with a rider who might finish third in the overall standings this season."
"We are very pleased to have reached this agreement,” added sporting director Marco Curioni. “Alex is an excellent rider, and especially during the last races he is showing his great skills on track.
“Thanks to the experience we accumulated over the years, from a technical point of view we can provide the best possible support to fight for the title of the Moto2 World Championship 2012. Furthermore Alex did not just convince us with his performance on track, but also his huge media presence and his charismatic character are key factors to fully satisfy the expectations of our sponsors."
NGM Forward Racing, which will also step up to MotoGP with a CRT Suter-BMW ridden by Colin Edwards in 2012, is best represented in the 2011 Moto2 standings by Jules Cluzel in 19th.
