Moto2: Pirro heads team-mate for maiden pole

Michele Pirro takes his first Moto2 pole position at Valencia as he heads up a Gresini 1-2 with Yuki Takahashi in second.
Michele Pirro will start from pole position for the final Moto2 World Championship round of the season at Valencia after picking his moment perfectly in a damp qualifying session.

With intermittent showers making their presence felt through the day, steady drizzle less than ten minutes into the session would prevent any rider from improving to the chequered flag.

As such, those who got their flying laps in early would prevail, with Pirro and Yuki Takahashi giving Gresini a fitting 1-2 on the grid on the weekend it races in honour of its late MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli.

Also taking advantage was Marc VDS Suter rider Mika Kallio, who has the opportunity to end a difficult maiden season in Moto2 on a high by starting from the front row for the first time this year.

Stefan Bradl, confirmed the 2011 champion ahead of qualifying after arch-rival Marc Marquez opted out of the race, will start in fourth position, while Phillip Island race winner Alex de Angelis and Sepang victory Thomas Luthi will join him on the second row.

Dominique Aegerter heads up row three on the Technomag-CIP bike, ahead of Tech 3 pairing Xavier Simeon and Mike di Meglio, while Simone Corsi completes the top ten.

Meanwhile, British riders Bradley Smith and Scott Redding, who was second fastest after FP3, will start 12th and 14th respectively.

Qualifying times:

1. Pirro (Moriwaki)
2. Takahashi (Moriwaki) +0.009s
3. Kallio (Suter) +0.410s
4. Bradl (Kalex) +0.803s
5. de Angelis (MotoBI) +0.821s
6. Luthi (Suter) +0.896s
7. Aergerter (Suter) +1.028s
8. Simeon (Tech 3) +1.115s
9. Di Meglio (Tech 3) +1.429s
10. Corsi (FTR) +1.498s

12. Smith (Tech 3) +1.585s
14. Redding (Suter) +1.636s

Seems even the weather wanted to play its part in making a tribute to Simoncelli by helping Gresini take the top two grid positions. With the championship decided you'd have to have a heart of stone not to want to see either Pirro or Takahashi being in the position to be able to dedicate a win to SuperSic tomorrow.
