One place behind team-mate Valentino Rossi in the 2011 world championship standings, Nicky Hayden just pipped the Italian superstar (by 0.04) to be ranked ninth in the Crash.net MotoGP Rider of the Year poll.

Hayden finished seven points behind Rossi in the championship. The American was the top Ducati rider in five races, using machinery that was often one development step behind that of Rossi. A podium in the damp Jerez race was the highlight of Hayden's third season at Ducati.

But while fans voted that Hayden had done a better job than Rossi in 2011, an average mark of 6 out of 10 is unlikely to cause celebration in the Hayden house.

Hayden is the highest ranked Ducati rider in this year's poll.

Crash.net's MotoGP Rider of the Year 2011:
9. Nicky Hayden 6.00
10. Valentino Rossi 5.96

About the vote: Over 79,000 votes were cast during this year's Crash.net MotoGP poll, which asked viewers to award each of the 17 full-time riders a score out of 10.

As well as results, viewers were asked to take into account factors such as machinery specification, performance relative to team-mates, injuries, plus the ability to communicate with fans and promote the sport.

The full 17-rider rundown will be listed after the winner is announced on December 31.
