Factory Yamaha MotoGP star Jorge Lorenzo had to settle for the third fastest time at Sepang today after setting the early pace on his YZR-M1 on day one.

Lorenzo slipped down the order on the second day of the official MotoGP tests in Malaysia behind the returning Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda) and his Yamaha team-mate Ben Spies.

Stoner hit the top spot after missing the first day of testing due to a back strain but less than a second covered the top three. Stoner's fastest lap was 2m0.895s, with Spies lapping in a time of 2m1.052s and Lorenzo in 2m1.068s.

Lorenzo, though, admitted he was feeling tired following the opening day of the test and hopes to find further improvement tomorrow.

The factory Yamaha team focused on gathering data to optimise the balance of the YZR-M1's chassis and worked on refining the power delivery of the larger capacity 1000cc engine.

"Today I was much more tired than yesterday so it was tough to finish with a good pace but we managed it. We didn't find any big improvements but some small details," said Lorenzo.

"Tomorrow we hope to make one big step. We improved our lap times a lot in the morning but in the afternoon when it was even hotter we managed to go faster which is very positive."

Texan ace Spies was knocked off the top spot by Stoner by just 0.157 seconds as he continues to impress on the new 1000cc M1.

The three-day test at Sepang concludes tomorrow.
