Moto2 and Moto3 testing kicks off a Valencia

2012 testing gets off to a chilly start for the Moto2 and Moto3 grand prix classes at Valencia.
Scott Redding and Sandro Cortese were fastest in their respective Moto2/Moto3 classes during the opening day of 2012 testing at Valencia.

There is no official timing at the test, which is scheduled to last for three days, but the Valencia Circuit Twitter account reports that Marc VDS rider Redding led the way with a best lap of 1m 36.4s.

That is 0.2sec under the official Moto2 lap record, set by Karel Abraham in 2010 (the 2011 race being damp), with fellow Kalex rider Pol Espargaro 0.6sec slower than Redding in second place for the Pons team.

Claudio Corti (Italians Kalex), Max Neukirchner (Kiefer Kalex), Esteve Rabat (Pons Kalex), Thomas Luthi (Interwetten Suter), Andrea Iannone (Speed Master FTR), and Simone Corsi (Ioda), Mika Kallio (Marc VDS Kalex) and Johan Zarco (JiR MotoBI) completed the top ten.

Returning former champion Toni Elias was eleventh for Aspar Suter, with Tech 3's Bradley Smith 14th and reigning 125cc champion Nico Terol (Aspar) 19th .

In the new Moto3 category, featuring 250cc four-strokes, Cortese is reported to have set the pace with a 1m 41.6s for the Red Bull Ajo KTM team.

That time, over two-seconds off 125GP lap record pace, put the Spaniard 0.9sec clear of Alberto Moncayo, whose Aspar Kalex-KTM team-mate Hector Faubel took third.

The rest of the top ten consisted of Niklas Ajo (TT Motion KTM), Luis Salom (RW Kalex-KTM), Danny Kent (Red Bull KTM), Miguel Oliveira (Monlau Honda), Zulfahmi Khairuddin (AirAsia KTM), Efren Vazquez (Laglisse Honda) and Brad Binder (RW Kalex-KTM).

Wednesday's action got off to a delayed start due to the extremely cold weather and the low grip levels caught out numerous riders.

Well done Scott, early days but took up where left off on the Kalex last season. Looks like the Kalex suits your style better than the Suter, hopefully fortunes will change this season with decent bike, you deserve it.
