New Pons Kalex rider Pol Espargaro insists he has plenty of margin to improve despite leading last week's opening test of 2012 at Valencia.
The young Spaniard, who took two podiums with the Speed-Up FTR team during his rookie Moto2 season, pushed Scott Redding from the top by 0.2sec (on overall times) on the third and final day at a chilly Valencia.
"The last day went very well and I gradually reduced my lap time to a 1min 35.4sec, much faster than I have ever gone at this circuit,” said the former 125cc title contender. “But the bike is still evolving and I don't yet know all the secrets, so the margin of improvement is still considerable.
“We have to keep working and I want to thank the team for the effort they are putting in. You don't get points or race wins in testing, but results like this give enormous confidence for the start of the championship.”
Team manager Sito Pons certainly has his sights aimed high for the third year of the 600cc grand prix class.
"The first test of 2012 has been very positive," he began. "Pol, Esteve [Rabat, eighth] and Axel [Pons, 19th] reduced their lap times every day and all three have gone quicker than last year.
"Now we will prepare for the next three days of testing, in Jerez. I have total confidence in this project and I will not be content with anything but fighting for race wins and the world title.”
Teams are not required to use the official Honda Moto2 engine for testing.
