Moto3: Kent keeps KTM on top of testing

"I am feeling confident and everything is going well... each lap we're learning something new" - Danny Kent.
Danny Kent kept Red Bull KTM on top of the Moto3 pre-season timesheets by leading all three days, during the second test of the year at Jerez.

Kent had been ranked fourth during the opening test in Valencia - led by team-mate Sandro Cortese - but immediately took the initiative at Jerez and went on to finish the three-day outing 0.4sec clear of Maverick Vinales (FTR Honda).

“I am feeling confident and everything is going well. We also managed to do a race simulation and each lap we're learning something new,” said 18-year-old Kent, preparing for his second full grand prix season.

Cortese, who won his first two grands prix during the final season of the 125cc World Championship, finished the Jerez test in fourth place, directly behind Aspar's Alberto Moncayo - the fastest of the Kalex-KTM riders.

Cortese brushed off a crash during day two: “It sometimes happen that you crash in tests when you're trying to go fast but I have a good feeling. We're always up with the top guys.”

Red Bull KTM boss Aki Ajo claimed he wasn't surprised to see the momentum swing in Kent's favour. “Jerez is a very different track to Valencia, but we could see here that it was one that suits Danny Kent,” he said.

With Vinales the only non-KTM rider in the top seven, the Austrian marque looks in good shape heading into the final test before the start of the inaugural Moto3 season.

“We have no big problems and we have to be happy that the engines are working well so we are mainly working on the settings,” said Ajo. “There's now a lot of hard work for the team and the KTM Racing Department to prepare for the next tests in three weeks and of course for the start of the season.”

The final pre-season test will be held back at Jerez from March 19-21.

I shall miss the two strokes but it looks like the new class is going to help increase the number of competitive bikes compared to the have and have not situation of the 125 Aprilia/Derbi days. Encouraging from the UK perspective to see Kent doing so well and you know Vinales is going to shine again in his second year. Can't wait for the season to start.
