Hayden ‘not thrilled’ with lap time

“We needed to squeeze a winter's worth of testing into this weekend” - Nicky Hayden.
Riding injured at the previous Sepang pre-season tests, Nicky Hayden did his best to make up for lost time on the new 1000cc Ducati GP12 with a huge 208 laps over three days at the final Jerez test.

To put that into context, the Spanish Grand Prix race distance is 27 laps and Hayden achieved his tally despite rain interrupting day two, when the American was fastest of all.

Sunday's dry final day saw Hayden slip to eighth on the timesheets, 1.1sec from Honda's Casey Stoner but less than 0.2sec from team-mate and fastest Ducati rider Valentino Rossi.

“It's been a very, very busy day. With my injury affecting the last tests, we needed to squeeze a winter's worth of testing into this weekend, and yesterday was basically a wash,” he said.

“Today we got to try some stuff on the bike and learned a few things. I'm not thrilled with my lap time because I thought I could go a bit quicker but I struggled a little with the fast corners.

“We've clearly got some work to do, but now it's time to get ready for Qatar, and I look forward to starting the season. I definitely feel better after coming here and getting to ride at close to 100 per cent and getting to understand the bike a bit more.

“Now it's time to see what we've got when we put the cards on the table.”

2012 will be former world champion Hayden's fourth season at Ducati and his first time back on an aluminium-frame bike since Honda in 2008.
